As a pet owner, I didn't know that veterinary practices are not required to be accredited through any state or local agency. A small percentage of practices, though, voluntarily pay to belong to the American Animal Hospital Association which provides on-site consultative and practice accreditation for companion animal hospitals. Every aspect of medical records, facility, equipment, and patient care are evaluated in a rigorous process spanning more than 900 standards of care. It is an extra effort to assure that patient care is always progressing, as technology and procedures improve.
