Skunk Antidote
Abstracted from Popular Science August 1995 Paul Krebaum, a chemist by training, studies “thiols” organic molecules which are responsible for some of nature’s most vile scents including decaying fish, fecal matter, and skunk musk. As a result, he has developed a necessary skill at fighting these smells with neutralizing compounds. This product is not available commercially, as it quickly denatures and cannot be bottled. The following recipe is the best we’ve found in helping “Fido” or “Fluffy” lose that dreaded skunk scent, but be forewarned: nothing is 100% effective. Your friends will know. Keep your furniture covered and keep your offending pet on washable bedding when on carpeted areas (or these will end up smelling faintly of skunk too). The unmistakable though slight smell of skunk will be detectable for probably a month, especially in damp weather. 1 quart 3% hydrogen peroxide ¼ cup baking soda 1 tsp. Dish soap
Bathe your pet in the above solution and rinse very well with plain water. Repeat if necessary. For getting that “just skunked” smell out of your home, try the services of a professional cleaning/smoke damage restoration company.
